How to Build a DIY Electric Hydrofoil board is quickly becoming the most sought-after sport/toy/build of the summer. I can still remember the first feeling I had when I was eight years old and I jumped on a surf board. The power of the ocean generated enough swell to propel me towards the shore. I was amazed at this feeling of seemingly standing on the water and having the energy of the wave propel me towards the shore. Standing on the water (via a surfboard) and moving across, is an incredible feeling and experience.
This summer hydrofoils are taking off (no pun intended). They are being adapted to stand up paddle boards (SUP), surfboards, kiteboards, and windsurfing boards. Although hydrofoils are not new having been used since the 70’s, they are gaining a resurgence in interest (maybe it is because America’s Cup racers have adapted large foils on their boats to reduce drag, and become some of the fastest boats on our planet).
There are few creators who have shared their concepts of electric hydrofoil boards, but they have yet to deliver a final product to the end user from what I understand. This proves just how new the concept and sport is. Here are a few designers below.

E-Foils can be placed on the bottom of the surfboard to propel the rider and the board across the water with minimal drag. The foil design provides the lift, and the electric motor/ propeller set-up powers the board forward through the water. Our DIY electric hydrofoil board utilizes a wireless electric trigger to control the variable motor speed. This will allow you to speed up and slow down while out on the water.
We are continuing to test and modify all aspects of our design. It has been a fun but long learning curve, however, it all started with that passion of getting on the water, and enjoying the great outdoors with friends and family. This past winter we have been ordering parts, designing CAD drawings, 3D printing like crazy, and sometimes pulling out a hair or two. I will all be worth it in the end when are able to ride across and water, and eventually share our hard work and design with fellow water sport lovers.
Our new DIY Electric hydrofoils are a way of bringing surfing to the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world. All you need is a body of water and you can be carving big turns and ripping up the coastline hovering over the water. This will open the enjoyment of the sport to everyone. Imagine sitting by the lake side, dreaming of waves, wind, or surf. Suddenly you can now jump on your silent electric hydrofoil board and cruise across the pond!
We are excited for the day when we see our DIY electric hydrofoils zipping by (quietly) on the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world.
We are currently riding for about 60 minutes. As battery power improves, and we can continually modify and tweak our components we will help to develop a sport for hours of fun on the water! Although, you can simple swap out the battery packs and continue having fun.
Hydrofoil wing designs continue to evolve. A core group of guys in Maui are continuing to test and develop new foils and wing/glide efficiency will improve as well as eFoil riding time.
Riders in North America, Europe, and around the world are pushing the sport forward. Everyone is making improvements in battery design, foil shapes and propeller systems. People are keen to share their knowledge and experience to make this new sport accessible for all. This is an exciting time as DIY electric hydrofoils, Foil boards and electric surfboards make a splash in the water.
